On Alverna Cher Sheue Pin: What we know so far

16 May 2020: A man, Wee Jun Xiang, 32, was found dead in his car at Deck 4B of the multi-storey car parkat Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road. 

19 May 2020: Chinese evening daily, Lianhe Wanbao, reported that the cause of Wee’s death attributed to a possible heart attack. He was pronounced dead on the scene. 

2 December 2020: Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, 38, who was the director of City Funeral Singapore Pte Ltd was arrested by the police. 

3 December 2020: Cher was charged with culpable homicide, not amounting to murder for her suspected involvement in the death of Wee. It was established that Wee was Cher’s ex-boyfriend. She was accused of causing Wee’s death. 

6 December 2020: Chinese evening daily, Lianhe Wanbao, interviewed Wee’s mother, who said that the family had rushed to the scene where her son’s body was found on May 16, and he was found seated in the driver’s seat of the car with his head up. 


10 December 2020: Cher returned to court via video link. It was revealed that she had discharged her previous solicitor and was represented by lawyers Josephus Tan, Marshall Lim and Cory Wong from Invictus Law on a pro bono basis. 


She was remanded at the Central Police Division for further investigations to take place. 


17 December 2020: Cher returned to court for the third time. She was remanded in Changi Prison Cluster A4 for psychiatric evaluation for three weeks. 


She was scheduled to return to court on 7 January 2021. 


14 April 2021: Cher requested for bail citing that “her daughters needed her”. She was told by the judge that even if a charge is non-capital, it does not mean that she is entitled to bail. 


Cher’s case is scheduled for further mention on June 29.


The latest charges - 26 October 2021

On 26 October 2021, it was reported that Cher's charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was downgraded to the following two charges:


  • abetting Mr Wee's suicide at the car park on May 16, 2020


  • obstructing the course of justice.


Cher is accused of turning the valve of a tank of nitrogen gas, then abetting Mr Wee to take his own life using the gas.


With regard to the charge of obstructing the course of justice, Cher is accused of asking a person named Lawrence Cheo Oon Hui to drive a van, which contained the a tank of nitrogen gas, away from the car park and disposing of a bag used in the suicide.


She is also alleged to have informed a police officer that Wee had told Cher he had chest discomfort for two weeks and that Cher believed Mr Wee died of a heart attack.


What's next


  • Cher is represented pro bono by Invictus Law counsels Josephus Tan, Cory Wong and Josiah Zee. She was offered bail of S$100,000.


  • Cher intends to post bail, and she will provide detailed instructions to her lawyers on the prosecution's plead-guilty offer once bail is posted.


The case has been adjourned to a pre-trial conference next month.
