[River Valley High] The morning after

This morning, at the mortuary, a child. Fatally wounded and awaiting an autopsy. Lying on a cold hard silver table. Outside, his parents waits. Every passing second feels like forever.

At a remand centre, a 16 years old waits to be charged with the murder of a 13 year old. With a brutal act of violence, he lost his former self, and assumes a new identity.

To both of their parents, they will forever be their sons, their “Ah Boy” and their “sayang”. This will never change.

This morning, we at #DeathKopitiam are still reeling from the shock of the tragedy that unfolded yesterday.

This morning, breathe a little easier, and hug your child a little closer. Be glad that they are still full of life and all that they continue to do to irritate you.

As our children grows, they leave the sanctuary that a Home offers and enters a brave new world.

We pin for them each day, praying for their safety and well-being. With each passing day, we lose our control as they grow into fine gentlemen and ladies.

Having a child is like perpetually having your heart walking outside of you - excited for how the future will unfold for them, but knowing that they are constantly vulnerable to the forces beyond our control. At that, we feel so helpless.

This morning, the first morning of the tragedy, a community and nation woke up to irrevocable loss. Whatever we do or say, we are unable to will the death away.

When love and death intersect, there is grief. It is the price of love.

It is this love that will bring us home, and it is also this love that will heal our nation, and unite our grieving people.
