No one deserves to die

The accident along Tanjong Pagar Road on the morning of 13 February 2021 has gripped the nation. The actions of the deceased, between ages 26 and 29, have led to polarising views.

What they did was wrong. What they had done was illegal. It cost them their lives. Five families are broken today, never to be whole again. But they do not deserve to die or be called names. For many of us, we do not know them, but others do. They were sons and brothers to their families, friends and buddies to their loved ones.

Regardless of what we think of their actions, irresponsible and rash no doubt, they have lost their lives. Will they be roadkills in future if they had survived? We do not know, and will never know. So making extrapolations from just this one incident alone does not help, or make us wiser as to the character and motivations of the deceased.

Many of their loved ones would very much love to have them, in person, commit to society to driving safely and be held accountable. But alas, what they have before them are cold and lifeless bodies. They left home in the day, never to return.

We also know that there are families who have lost their loved ones as a result of the actions and decisions of another irresponsible driver. Every too often, when they read of a similar incident, they would be reminded of the circumstances that saw them lose their loved ones on the roads, reliving their hurt.
Their anger is certainly understandable, and we hope that we can also understand their loss and pain.

This is a time of grief for many. They say, time will heal all wounds, and many will forget this accident and the hurtful words said on social media pages once the news cycle moves on to other news. But to five families in Singapore, 13 of February will forever be lived and relived till they breathe their last. Reunion dinners will never be the same again for these families.

This is a time for more empathy, not less. Be kind, we never know when we'll need it for ourselves.

And while we are still at it, let's hold Ms Raybe Oh Siew Huey, 26, who is battling to save herself, in our thoughts and prayers. The burdens, both physical and emotional, that she will have to live with will not be light. She needs all our support and love.
