[Obit] In loving memory of Phoebe Ho

Ho Meili, also known as Phoebe, or to those in the food rider community in the Woodlands area, “e-bike number 25”, was with two of her friends when an unfortunate incident happened on the early morning of 7 October 2021. She was 35.

Phoebe, a single mother, had little financially but she wanted to give the very best future to her two children, aged 10 and 15. Her youngest sister, Rachel, recounted, “all Meili wanted was to be able to buy a flat where she and her children can call home”. To that end, in the past one year, she toiled especially hard. She goes the extra mile to earn that extra commission so that she can save up for her children’s future. As much as she wanted to, one of her regrets was that she was unable to spend as much time with her two boys as she would have liked. She hopes her two boys can, in future, understand why mummy couldn’t spend more time with them. She worked, with them and their future constantly on her mind.

She leads a simple and honest life. As an affectionate person, after buying lunch for her boys and before she goes to work, she would make it a point to say “Mama loves you dearly” to her boys. Due to her educational background, she wasn’t the most articulate person, so she expresses her love towards her family in her own little way by placing a “love-shaped symbol ❤️” before the name of each of her family members, including her Dajie and Erjie, in her phone contact list.

She is and will always be remembered as the person with the biggest heart amongst her four sisters. She was, in the words of her loved ones, “always kind and forgiving”. Today, in the immediate days after her death, her loved ones are deeply in grief, shocked and tired of a tomorrow without their most beloved sister. Her boys, today, are feeling the acute absence in their lives.

At the point of her death, it was deeply upsetting to Rachel that she wasn’t there to bid her farewell. Meili was always the one to be there for her whenever she needed it, but when she needed it the most, her youngest sister couldn’t be there. There’s regret and there’s pain. Grief is the price of love. They grieve, because they love Phoebe. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

There were too many words left unsaid. When we asked Rachel what was the one thing that she like to tell her sister, she replied, “I miss you so so much and I love you deeply. Our family are all so proud of you and your grit to do well in life”. Meili, Rachel said, “I want to be your sister again in my next life”. Her words moved us.

With this short little obituary, we remember and celebrate the life of Phoebe Ho, a life that has left us too soon.

Note: This obituary, written at the request of Rachel, is our tribute to Phoebe. Rachel was very generous with her sharing, and this was the written product. We hope that this post can help Rachel and her family grieve the loss of their beloved daughter, sister and friend.
